We are pleased to offer this limited edition print by Sancintya Mohini Simpson to support her participation in the prestigious Artes Mundi prize in Cardiff, Wales.
combing, waiting, praying, cleaning is a limited edition work, printed on 320 gsm Sihl Masterclass Textured Cotton Rag paper with a deckled edge.
The image was created using techniques and materials from South Asian miniature painting. Natural pigments derived from minerals, plants and semi-precious stones, are painted onto handmade wasli paper and burnished with an agate stone, before intimate details are rendered onto the painting with a fine squirrel haired brush.
Simpson’s Indian ancestors were sent to South Africa as indentured labourers to work on colonial sugar plantations, In this work she continues her exploration of the fragmented stories of the life and labour of her matrilineal ancestors during that time: combing, oiling, waiting, selling, praying, cleaning, washing, bathing, carrying, holding, caring.
